چکیده

ABSTRACT We present a single rate multi ast ongestion ontrol s heme (pgm ) whi h is TCP-friendly and a hieves s alability, stability and fast response to variations in network onditions. pgm is suitable for both non-reliable and reliable data transfers; it uses a window-based TCP-like ontroller based on positive ACKs and run between the sender and a group's representative, the a ker. The innovative part of pgm is a fast and low-overhead pro edure to sele t (and tra k hanges of) the a ker, whi h permits us to onsider the a ker as a moving re eiver rather than a hanging one. As su h, the s heme is robust to measurement errors, and supports fast response to hanges in the re eiver set and/or network onditions. The s heme has been implemented in the PGM proto ol, and the paper presents a number of experimental results on its performan e.

Fairness of a Single-Rate Multicast Congestion Control Scheme

Recently, a TCP-friendly, single-rate multicast congestion control scheme called pgmcc was introduced by one of the authors. In this paper, we study the fairness of pgmcc in a variety of scenarios in which a multicast transfer session competes with long-lived TCP flows and web-like traffic. We evaluate fairness of the pgmcc scheme at different timescales and compare it with the fairness of the ...

Adaptive smooth multicast protocol for multimedia transmission: Implementation details and performance evaluation

In this paper we propose a new single-rate multicast congestion control scheme named Adaptive Smooth Multicast Protocol (ASMP), for multimedia transmission over best-effort networks. The smoothness lays in the calculation and adaptation of the transmission rate, which is based on dynamic estimations of protocols’ parameters and dynamic adjustment of the ‘smoothness factor’, as well. ASMP key at...

Fairness Analysis of Multicast Congestion Control: A Case Study on pgmcc

Fairness to current Internet traffic, particularly TCP, is an important requirement for new protocols in order to be safely deployed in the Internet. This specifically applies to multicast protocols that should be deployed with great care. In this paper we provide a detailed fairness analysis for a multicast congestion control scheme ‘pgmcc’ [11] when running with competing TCP flows. We try to...

Performance Comparison of Active Network-Based and Non Active Network-Based Single-Rate Multicast Congestion Control Protocols

This paper presents the comparisons of two single-rate multicast protocol, Active Error Recovery/Nominee Congestion Avoidance (AER/ NCA) and Pragmatic General Multicast Congestion Control (PGMCC). Both protocols use worst receiver mechanism, NACK-based feedback, and window-based transmission rate adjustment. AER/NCA is implemented using the new Active Networks technology, while PGMCC is impleme...

Dynamics of the "pgmcc" Multicast Congestion Control Protocol

Fairness to current Internet traffic, particularly TCP, is one of the important requirements for deploying multicast protocols. In this paper, we investigate the fairness of the multicast congestion control protocol “pgmcc,” implemented on top of the PGM multicast protocol. Pgmcc is one of the most promising multicast congestion control proposals, but it has not yet been extensively stress-test...
